My two-year-old twins love pumpkins! Does your toddler like pumpkins, too? I wanted to come up with some pumpkin toddler activities they could do that didn’t include carving.
My twins were so happy when we went to the pumpkin patch and picked out pumpkins.
Before the pumpkin patch opened we did a pumpkin patch sensory table, because they were so excited and couldn’t stop talking about going to the pumpkin patch.
Your pumpkins will get a lot of use by doing all of these activities, and you can still carve them when they’re done with these!
Not to mention, your toddler will have fun, while also learning so many skills!
This pumpkin craft kept my 2-year-old twins busy for a long time – at least 20 minutes of quiet time – which is amazing.
Putting stickers on pumpkins is great for working on fine motor skills and letting your little one be creative. Let them choose what stickers they want to put on and how they want to decorate.
I got a whole bunch of Halloween stickers at the dollar store and we still had some leftover after this activity.
Then they will probably love washing pumpkins!
Just fill a little shallow storage container with some soap (I used dish soap but bubble bath would work well, too) and water.
Add in some dish scrubbers or vegetable scrubbers.

My twins love pumping their own soap. You can buy empty ones new or just use ones you already have. I have tons laying around since I make my own soap with them.
They got to pump the soap much as they wanted with this sensory bin.
I put food coloring in it to make orange and purple foaming soap. This is optional but the soap pumps really makes this activity extra engaging and works their hand muscles.
This is another easy pumpkin activity and the paint washes off, so you can reuse the pumpkins for another craft!
I used some washable paint like this kind. Just put some paint on some cardboard for fast and easy cleanup!
You could use black and white or purple paint on an orange pumpkin. You can let them use their hands or a brush (my twins did both).
My twins loved getting messy with this activity. And then we washed the paint right off – which was half the fun.
Painting is great for encouraging creativity, expression, and it’s a good messy sensory play activity!
You could play music (I like to play classical) while painting and it has an effect on the painting (or art in general) process (source). We focused a lot on this in my Master’s teaching program and learned how it helps bring out creativity and adds sensory awareness. You can add music with any form of art (coloring with crayons or markers, dancing, movement, painting, drawing, etc.) and it will benefit your child.
Painting on a pumpkin also adds a whole new perspective to art.
Use some washable markers for a quick and easy toddler pumpkin activity.
My boys love coloring with markers (they like to color everything with markers – even the couches).
So I had a feeling they would really enjoy this.
Markers are great for learning colors, practicing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and great for pre-writing practice.
The markers wash right off the pumpkins when they’re done.
Put some shaving cream into some tubs with pumpkins. I used cheap shaving cream from the dollar store for this activity.
Add in spoons, measuring cups, etc.
I also added in little bugs from the dollar store.
They had a blast smearing the shaving cream and scooping it up.
This is such a fun sensory play activity. Watch your child closely to make sure they don’t try to put this in their mouth. Cool whip could be an alternative for this activity that would be taste safe and edible.
My twins were so engaged and kept busy with these activities. I hope your child will enjoy these pumpkin toddler activities, too!
I decided to do most of these activities outside so there would be less clean up and it was nice out. But any of these ideas could be done indoors.
Underbed storage containers are great for activities like these because they keep everything in one place. You can put them on the floor with a towel underneath and cleanup is pretty easy and minimal.
