Sharing is caring!
This fall leaf sorting activity takes about a minute to set up and will keep your toddler entertained, and learning!
My boys are 2/12 and have already practiced sorting in so many practical ways, and I’m sure your toddler has, too!
My twins usually sort their toys when they clean up. They know one type of blocks (our Mega blocks) goes in one container and our other kind (Duplo blocks) go in another.
Toddlers sort things in many ways and we might not even realize they are doing it, but it’s a big milestone and takes a lot of thinking skills! Sorting or classifying helps children notice how items are alike and different which is important for math skills later on.
There are usually several ways you can sort or classify items.
You can sort by color, size, attributes, etc.
For this fall leaf sorting activity, my toddlers sorted by the color of the leaf.
They sorted red, orange, and yellow leaves.
I first showed my twins what to do.
Then they started sorting them on their own.
I wasn’t focusing on if they matched them in the correct color. This kept them entertained and they were happy!
About halfway through the activity they just started putting the leaves into any bowl.
In addition to being a great early math activity for toddlers and preschoolers, this activity is also great for fine motor skills.
My boys really worked hard to pick up the leaves with the tongs.
They love using tongs so this was really fun for them. Tongs are used for a lot of activities we do. They like them because they’re “real” and not toys.
I hope your child enjoys this leaf sorting activity as mine did!
