Lavender Playdough

Sharing is caring!

Making lavender playdough is one of my favorite scented playdoughs to make.  It smells amazing and is so calming for adults and kids!

When I make this lavender playdough recipe it smells like aromatherapy in the house.  I love it!

Plus it’s so simple and quick to make.  I can make this playdough in under 10 minutes.  That’s faster than I can drive to the store to buy playdough for my kids to play with!

Lavender Playdough

Lavender playdough is a great activity for kids to do after school.  It’s a great sensory activity and very calming.

This playdough is so soft and is a recipe I use for my other scented play doughs such as peppermint and gingerbread.

With this recipe you can really just interchange scents if you stick the basic play doh recipe.

Making homemade playdough is very inexpensive and fun for toddlers and kids.  It’s great for kids to help with the process.  They can learn measuring and cooking skills!

If you don’t have a stovetop to cook playdough on, you can make this no-cook playdough recipe and just add in the lavender and food coloring.  It has a slightly different texture but is so easy to make!

Ingredients for Lavender Playdough:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3-5 drops of Lavender essential oil (more or less depending on how strong you want it)
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tarter
  • 1 cup water
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Wax or parchment paper

Instructions:

  1. Add all of the dry ingredients (flour, salt, cream of tarter) to a saucepan.  Mix well with a spoon.
  2.  Add the water, vegetable oil, and food coloring to a separate container and mix well.  For my purple color I added 3 drops of blue and 3 drops of red food coloring.  You can add more or less depending on how deep you want the color of the playdough.  Stir the wet mixture well.
  3. Pour the wet mixture into the saucepan with the dry ingredients and mix well.
  4. Cook on medium-low heat.  Stir it continually until a ball starts to form and gets thick.
  5. Once a ball is formed, take it off the heat and put it on wax or parchment paper to cool a bit.
  6. When cool enough to touch, knead the dough well, into a ball.
  7. Store in an airtight container (you can add real lavender pieces into it for extra scent and texture)

This is such a good play dough recipe when kids (or adults) are anxious or have stress, or just to relax and wind down in the evening.

They can squeeze or roll the playdough while smelling lavender.  I even use it myself sometimes!
