Toddler Art Mud Painting Activity

Looking for something different to do outdoors with your child?  This Toddler Art Mud Painting Activity is a wonderful outdoor activity – no matter the weather.

Painting with mud is such a fun activity.  I also love this Toddler Art Mud Painting activity because it’s a “safe” paint for my toddlers.

Doing an art activity outdoors like this is perfect.  Because they can get as messy as they want.  Does your toddler love to get messy?  Mine do!

They can use the paper – or not – with this activity.  Really anything is up for painting with mud as long as it can wash off the surface.

Mud Painting is also a no-prep activity – one reason I love it even more!

It’s so nice being outside and doing something with art and nature.  My twin toddlers really loved this activity because they could get messy and had no limits as to where they could paint.  They also made their own paint.  We had a puddle since it was wet out and they used that for their paint.  We then eventually scooped it into a bowl.

What You Need For The Mud Painting Activity

• A mud puddle OR
• Some dirt and water (you can make your own mud if there are no puddles)
• A Bowl (or just use the mud puddle) – I like to use stainless steel ones outdoors similar to these
• Paint Brushes or other objects to paint with (you could use paint rollers, twigs, branches, their fingers and hands, etc.)

Setting Up The Toddler Art Mud Painting Activity

• Mix dirt and water to make mud and/or use a mud puddle (we used a tiny mud puddle in our yard)
• Get out different brushes or utensils to use (or they can use their hands)
• Lay out a large piece of paper and tape it down with painter’s tape or duct tape (cardboard would work, too)

I hope your little one will have fun getting creative and messy with this activity!  This is an awesome sensory activity that can be done whether it’s sunny or rainy!

We washed our hands off outside with a clean bowl of water because they were pretty muddy.  We will definitely be using those puddles outside for painting more often!
