Homemade Shaker Instruments for Toddlers

Sharing is caring!

Do you have a toddler who loves music?  My 9-year-old made these homemade shaker instruments for my toddler twins.  They absolutely love instruments, singing, and dancing, so this was a great activity for them!

These Homemade Shaker Instruments for Toddlers are so simple to make!  And you probably already have the stuff at home to make them with.

My twins have some of these egg shakers and absolutely love them.  They use them at toddler storytime at the library so I bought some for home.  Since my toddlers love instruments and they offer so many benefits, I thought this DIY activity would be perfect!

The size of the shaker is perfect for them to hold it.  And I made it bright and colorful so it would be inviting to play with.

These shakers are so easy to make, too!  And you can make them in under 5 minutes!

Here’s what you need for the homemade shaker instruments for toddlers:

  • 2 Tablespoons Uncooked Rice (Beans could also work)

  • Duct Tape (I used a fun colorful one)

  • Toilet Paper Roll (I needed 2 since I have twins)

Making The Shaker:

  • Unroll your duct tape and cover one side first.

  • Once it is completely sealed on one side, fill with 2 tablespoons of uncooked rice or beans.

  • Cover the rest of the toilet roll completely so none of the rice or beans leak through.

  •  I wrapped mine around multiple times.

  • Let your toddler have fun shaking!  You could play music, sing songs, and dance while they shake their shakers.

DIY Craft Instrument

My toddlers loved this shaker!  I think they like it as much as their egg one.

Just make sure you supervise closely with this activity in case they try peeling the tape off or try to get the rice/beans out.

My toddlers were too busy shaking and marching/dancing/singing with these to try to take the tape off.  Plus the duct tape isn’t easy to peel off.

Instruments are so great for kids of all ages.  My twins really enjoy their guitar, ukulele, piano, shakers, and drums.  This is a great activity for your child to express themselves and get out some energy!

I loved that these shakers were so fast to make and my older child could help with this craft.  This is something you could definitely have your child help you with so they see the process that goes into making it.

These shakers held up after a day of being played with, so they are quite sturdy!  I’m glad we have another instrument to add to our collection!
