Outdoor Preschool Shape Activity

Sharing is caring!

Looking for a fun outdoor preschool shape activity?

This outdoor preschool shape activity is hands-on and engaging for toddlers and pre-k kids!

All you need for this shape activity is some chalk and a small outdoor area.

This activity combines math skills and gross motor skills in one simple activity.

There are many ways to differentiate this activity depending on your child’s skill level.

For toddlers just learning about shapes, you can do this activity together.  Toddlers can color the shapes or trace them.

You can first model for them how to do this activity.  Draw a line to a matching shape, and see if they can do one on their own – or help them draw a line.

Draw more complex shapes (hexagon, pentagon, etc.) and have the child name the shape for kids who have more experience with shapes.

Matching games for toddlers are a great learning activity.

Matching games can help with the classification of objects which all kids will use throughout their education (source).

One of my twins loved this activity, and the other one just wanted to draw his own shapes – which is perfectly normal.  This activity is not for every toddler – if they just want to draw shapes or pictures, then draw with them and explain what shapes you are drawing to them.  Vocabulary and exposure are what’s important with this activity!  Gear the learning towards your child.

Gross Motor Toddler Activity

This is such a fun and low prep activity to set up for toddlers and preschoolers.

This shape activity is a whole-body learning activity, which has many benefits to children learning!  By using whole-body learning, kids may be able to recall the information later and have long-term memory on the topic and more (source).

I try to mix up the activities I do with my toddlers to keep them interested and use what we have!  When we’re indoors, we do this shape matching activity.

I hope your toddler enjoys this preschool shape activity!
