I love playdough for creative play, and by adding cookie cutters and decorations, this playdough is perfect for imaginary play.

Your child can pretend to bake with this, or make whatever they want.  Playdough is perfect for open-ended play for toddlers.

Ingredients for Gingerbread Playdough

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tarter
  • 1 Tablespoon Ground Ginger
  • 1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon (or pumpkin pie spice)
  • 1 cup of water
  • Wax or parchment paper 

I bought all of the ingredients for this playdough from the dollar store except the flour and oil.  Playdough is so cheap and easy to make from home.  And it smells way better than store-bought when you add spices!

This gingerbread playdough recipe is easy to make and uses common spices you probably have at home!

This recipe stays moist and soft for a very long time if you store it in a ziplock bag or airtight container. 

We’ve been playing with this same playdough for well over a month.  And that’s a long time for playdough to last at my house!

How To Make Gingerbread Playdough

1. Add all of the ingredients into a medium saucepan.  Mix well.

2. Cook on medium-low heat. Stir it continually until a ball starts to form and gets thick.

3. Once a ball is formed, take it off the heat and put it on wax or parchment paper to cool a bit.  

4. When cool enough to touch, knead the dough into a ball.

5. Store in an airtight container.

My toddlers played for over an hour with this playdough.  And they kept commenting on how good it smelled!

 I even squished some of this dough and kept smelling it – it’s definitely a stress reliever! 

You can make a playdough tray for your child by adding in cookie cutters, beads, googly eyes, etc.  Find what you have around the house!  I added everything into a tray and let my toddlers play.

A playdough tray is good for open-ended play.  Let your child use their imagination and build what they want.
