Toddler Painting With Water Activity

Sharing is caring!

Do you need a quick and easy idea to do with your toddler?  You should try this toddler painting with water activity!

This activity is so simple and easy to set up, and kept my twin boys busy!  Your child will also be learning so much with this toddler painting with water activity.

My boys love water and paintbrushes so I knew this would be the perfect activity for them.  And there was nothing to set up for this activity, which made it even better.

If your toddler likes art, painting, and water play, then this is a great activity for them.  You probably already have the stuff to make this with, too!

Painting with water

Setting Up the Toddler Painting with Water Activity:

  • Get some clear plastic cups (any cups will work, but with clear cups, they can see through and see the colors)
  • I filled them up about 1/3 with water
  • Add one drop of food coloring into each cup (you can mix or make whatever colors you want!).  Your toddler can help you with this part.
  • Lay out some paper (we did this outside since it was a little messy with the cup of water and they wanted to hold them)
  • Give your child some paint brushes

With this activity, I really just let my twins explore the water.  They painted on paper with it.  They poured the colors back and forth into the cups and mixed them, too!

It really is a great activity for early science and mixing colors!  The “paint” wasn’t super bright on the paper, but I did this activity more for them having fun with the paint brushes and added the food coloring to make it more exciting.

The water did end up being poured everywhere and not so much on the paper in the end.  But they definitely had so much fun with this activity!  I’m sure your toddler will have fun with this activity, too!  It’s definitely a process art activity!

What your toddler will be gaining with this activity:

  • Creativity
  • Expression
  • Early Science (mixing and pouring colors)
  • Fine Motor Skills
  • Pouring Skills

I set out the cups of water next to the paper outside.  They were interested in painting at first, but then it turned into mixing all the colors and pouring them together.  They really got creative with this activity!  Since we were outside, I just let them have fun and play with the water however they wanted.

Painting with water colors is something we will definitely do more of this summer.  My twins really loved this idea and had so much fun exploring the water and different colors.

This really allowed them to be creative with this fun and simple art and water activity.
