Sharing is caring!
My twin toddlers are now starting to get an interest in letters. I thought it would be a good time to introduce the letters to them in an engaging way that is fun to do and easy to make! That’s where these easy toddler ABC activities come in handy – and are perfect for preschool homeschool curriculum. All of these activities are free or very cheap to make, with stuff you might already have!
We talk about letters all the time. If we see a letter that their name starts with we say what it is and the sound. I talk to my twins about letters in books, on signs we see, just about anything you could think of where letters exist that we run into on a daily basis.
The focus of these letter activities for my toddlers is just to recognize the letter. I am setting the foundation for them to then go on and learn letter sounds and putting the sounds together. We do talk about the sounds the letters make but the goal of this activity is just to recognize what letters are and how each letter looks different – a basic introduction of letters.
Instead of focusing on letters A-Z, I am focusing on my twins learning their names first.
It is much less overwhelming since there are way fewer letters involved compared to the alphabet. It’s a good start to introducing letters in a meaningful way. It’s always a good idea when you teach to make it meaningful and relate it to the child. Information sticks better that way and they will stay engaged.
My older child had one of those rock painting kits and only used a few of the rocks to paint. Instead of donating it, I decided to paint the rocks for my toddlers.
They were so excited to play with these rocks.
For this activity, we played with them outside in their trucks, but it would also be a great indoor activity.
They loaded the rock letters in their trucks. They looked at all the letters. I only gave them around 7 rocks to play with which seemed to be a good amount and not too overwhelming.
Be sure you watch your toddlers with these and choose rocks that are big enough so they won’t swallow or choke on them. I also watched my toddlers very closely with this because sometimes they like to throw the rocks.
For this activity, you just need milk jug caps, or any other caps big enough so your toddler can’t swallow them and some empty containers.
I used containers like these. (affiliate link) Just cut a hole in the lid of the container so the cap can fit through.
Write letters on the caps with a permanent marker. You could start with just a few letters or letters from your toddler’s name if you don’t have a lot of caps.
I said the letter to my twins as they were picking them up, and then they put them in the container.
This is also a wonderful activity for practicing fine motor skills and counting.

This is something so easy and simple to make that you can use over and over again. You just need some paint card samples (preferably ones with holes like mine). I got my paint chip cards from Lowe’s. I chose a wide variety of colors (so they can also work on their colors with these cards and the vibrant colors make it inviting to play with).
Write the letters of the alphabet on each color with a permanent marker. I had extra paint chip cards so I wrote each of my twin’s name on a card.
Use ribbon to tie all the cards together like a book. You will need to leave it pretty loose so the pages can turn.
This activity is great for singing the ABC song. I also say the letter and something that starts with that letter. They love that this is their own little book and they can carry it around (Of course, I made two of them- so they could each have their own).
This is also another easy and simple activity for preschool homeschool curriculum that my toddlers were so engaged in.
All you need is painter’s tape and a wall, floor, or cookie sheet.
We traced the tape with our finger and then said the letter. You could also say the sound of the letter and things that start with that letter.
My twins didn’t take off the tape in order, but they had fun while doing this activity and was great for introducing the letters in their names.
We also did this on a cookie sheet and just focused on one letter at a time. This was a fun preschool homeschool curriculum activity to take outside since it was nice out!
This activity is also great for working on fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
