Preschool Letter Recognition Activity

Sharing is caring!

This preschool letter recognition activity is so simple to set up and very engaging!

Does your toddler or preschooler have an interest in letters?  Or will they be starting kindergarten soon?  This preschool letter recognition activity is a good way to practice learning letters and also assess what letters your toddler knows.

Since I stay home with my toddlers and they will not be going to preschool this year, I’m doing more learning activities with them at home.  This alphabet rescue activity took me about two minutes to put together and the twins loved it!

Plus it helped me see where they are with knowing their letters and sounds, and what they still need to work on.

Learning the alphabet takes lots of repetition and practice!  I usually talk about letters we see in books and other places we come across them (on signs, packages, puzzles, etc.).  Anywhere you can incorporate practicing letters with your toddler is beneficial.

For this activity I used letters from our alphabet puzzle, but use whatever letters you have!

The twins loved peeling the letters off the table and finding their match.  It’s great for fine motor skills and strengthening the pincer grip to get ready for writing!

To set up this activity, just tape letters to a table (I used painters tape so it peeled off easily).

I started with about 9 letters so it wasn’t overwhelming (and they are still working on learning most letters).

You can put down more or less depending on your toddlers level.  You can do just the letters in their name, letters they don’t know yet, or any other way you want to differentiate the activity for them.

Tape down a piece of paper to the table and write the letters on the paper.

Have them peel them off and match!

You could do this game with numbers, shapes, sight words, match lower case to upper case, etc.!

I added more letters, because my toddlers still wanted to play the game!

When they picked up a letter I modeled first by saying what letter it was and the sound.  Then they found the matching letter.  I helped them find the letters for the ones they didn’t know.

This is a great way to see which letters in the alphabet your toddler can recognize while being hands-on and having fun at the same time!  Next time we will do this alphabet game with lower case letters!

Will you try this alphabet recognition activity with your preschooler?
