This play dough and blocks activity is so much fun and so easy.  And your toddler will be learning so much!

Play dough is great for kids.  It’s so wonderful for sensory play and really allows them to be creative.

Usually, I just give my toddlers some play dough and sit with them and let them build what they want.  But I decided to add another element to it.  I wanted to incorporate some basic math into this activity.

My twin boys love playing with play dough.  They really get creative with it.  They roll out worms and snakes, make houses, and drive all their cars in it to make tire tracks.

I decided to add their wooden blocks to it and let them build.  They really loved this fun idea.

What your toddler will be gaining with this play dough and blocks activity:

  • Shapes- We talked about the different blocks they were using and their attributes (talk about squares, triangles, rectangles, etc.).  We talked about how triangles have 3 sides, squares and rectangles have 4 sides.  Squares have 4 points and triangles have 3 points.
  • Fine motor skills – They had to pick up the tiny blocks and press them into the playdough really working their hand muscles.
  • Planning and thinking ahead skills
  • Problem Solving Skills
  • Vocabulary (rectangle, square, corners, sides, imprint)
  • Imaginative Play
  • Independent Play

One of my twins built a garage for his car.  This took a lot of planning and reasoning.  He had to think of what blocks to use and in what manner.  I did guide him with this activity, but he ultimately built it!  He was really proud of his garage!

Setting Up the Activity:

  • Get out some playdough (I put mine on a cookie sheet so my twins could each have their own space)
  • Put some wooden blocks (or any blocks!) on the cookie sheet, you could add cars
  • Sit with them at first and show them what to do if they are younger.  Model building and putting shapes in the play dough.
  • They can make imprints, stack them with playdough, make houses, garages, etc.  Let them use their imagination and have fun!
